In the 19th and early 20th centuries, large Jewish communities existed across North Africa, in predominately Arab countries. Two of these communities are showcased in the postcard galleries that follow: Morocco and Tunisia. Many postcards included in this collection were commissioned by European publishing housing, largely for European audiences. Particular attention was paid to Jewish sartorial practices as well as the Jewish neighborhoods of North African cities.
